The Problem We Solve

Modernising signalling on a live railway is one of the hardest jobs in rail.

Brownfield CBTC conversions and ETCS deployments fail for predictable reasons: requirements that don't survive contact with suppliers, interfaces nobody owns, testing that starts too late, and software defects that surface in revenue service.

MI-Signalling exists to prevent exactly that.

We're an independent signalling and systems engineering consultancy covering the full V lifecycle of digital train control. Our people have held senior technical delivery roles on some of the world's largest CBTC and ETCS programmes.

From the first requirement written to the last train accepted into passenger service.

About Us

Independent expertise, built on major CBTC and ETCS programmes.

MI-Signalling is a UK-headquartered rail signalling and systems engineering consultancy serving clients across North America and Europe.

Our Story

Built by engineers who've delivered.

MI-Signalling was founded in 2024 by Janagan Yoganathan, a signalling and systems engineer with over 15 years in digital train control. His career includes senior technical delivery on a major European metro CBTC modernisation and technical leadership on the CBTC programme of one of North America's largest metros.

On those programmes he introduced operator-led testing: putting the people who run the railway at the centre of software acceptance, so defects are found and fixed before deployment. Signalling software quality rose as a result.

That discipline extends to operating railways. Our engineers have traced deep-rooted technical faults on live CBTC networks and resolved them, cutting delays for passengers.

Today we're engaged at senior technical level on flagship CBTC and ETCS programmes across North America and Europe.

Why We Exist

Our mission

To make digital signalling programmes succeed: train control systems that enter service safely and perform reliably for decades after.

Our vision

A rail industry where modernisation no longer means delay and overrun. Where every agency can call on independent, experienced engineers at the stages of a programme where they matter most.

Why Choose Us

Why agencies and suppliers choose MI-Signalling

Operating-railway experience

Our expertise comes from live brownfield conversions on some of the world's busiest metros and main lines. Railways carrying passengers every day while we modernised them.

Independent, and on your side

We sit on your side of the table. Our design reviews, safety assessments and verification carry no supplier allegiance, and we work to recognised rail safety standards.

Full-lifecycle fluency

From authoring the technical specification to accepting software into revenue service, we speak every stage of the V lifecycle. Nothing gets lost in handover between phases.

Senior people on your programme

Engage MI-Signalling and you deal directly with the engineers who did the work. The people with the track record are the people who turn up.

Services

Specialist services across the digital signalling lifecycle.

CBTC and ETCS expertise for transit agencies, infrastructure owners and suppliers. From first specification to reliable revenue service.

01 · Specify & procure with confidence

Get the contract right before a single supplier is engaged.

The most expensive signalling mistakes are written into contracts years before anyone notices them. We author the technical specifications, operational scenarios and concepts of operations that give your procurement an unambiguous, testable target. Then we validate supplier bids against them.

  • Technical contract specifications for train control systems
  • Concept of Operations and Maintenance development
  • Operational scenario specifications for digital signalling
  • Technical contract validation expertise
  • Requirements definition and management (DOORS)
The benefit to you: fewer change orders and fewer disputes, because suppliers priced against what you actually need.
02 · Independent review & assurance

An expert, independent eye on every design decision.

Design flaws found on paper are cheap to fix. Found in service, they cost millions.

Our design reviews and independent safety assessments catch issues while they're still cheap to fix, and give your board and your regulator evidence they can rely on. We work to recognised European rail safety standards.

  • Design reviews of digital signalling systems
  • Design authority services
  • Independent safety assessment to recognised rail standards
  • Independent software and safety assessment
The benefit to you: confidence that the system you're buying is the system you'll safely operate.
03 · Integrate, test & enter service

From factory acceptance to first passenger, without surprises.

Integration is where signalling programmes are won or lost: multiple suppliers, live infrastructure, and interfaces nobody wants to own.

We manage those interfaces, set the V&V strategy, oversee integration testing, and drive software and systems through acceptance into revenue service. Our operator-led Software Acceptance Testing approach finds defects while they're still cheap to fix, before build freeze.

  • Interface management between suppliers and stakeholders
  • Verification & validation strategy and management
  • Systems integration testing and commissioning
  • Software and systems acceptance into revenue service
  • Integration of signalling into operations and maintenance
The benefit to you: a first passenger day that arrives on schedule, with the defects already found and fixed.
04 · Perform & improve in service

The real test starts in passenger service.

A CBTC system that underperforms in service costs the railway every day. We improve operating digital railways: RAMS and reliability studies, root cause analysis of signalling failures, and hands-on performance work of the kind that cut CBTC delays on one of the world's busiest metros.

  • CBTC performance and reliability improvement on operating railways
  • Reliability studies and RAMS expertise
  • Root cause analysis of signalling failures
The benefit to you: a railway that consistently delivers the performance it was designed for.
